The Web agent block (Agents) researches a record across the web with AI and returns answers you can use later in the workflow. It reads the record that started the run, runs web searches, and returns the answers. It writes nothing back on its own. To save the answers, pair it with Update record or Update list entry. The block accepts a record only, not a list entry. A list entry is a row in an Attio list. Get that distinction right first when you set up the block.

Inputs

Outputs

Reference an answer later in the workflow as {{ steps.web_agent.answers }}. If you asked more than one question, you can also point to a single answer by its position. The Web agent does not save its answers to any record on its own. Route each answer into an Update record block to make it stick.

Behavior

The block runs once per triggering record. It reads the record you pass in, performs web searches to ground its answers, and returns one answer per question in the order you listed them. Cost is token-based, so it varies with every run. A token is a small chunk of text that the AI charges for. More questions, broader prompts, and longer answers all raise the token count and the credit cost. A tightly scoped question such as “What is Acme’s current employee headcount?” costs less than an open prompt such as “Tell me everything about this company.” The agent’s tool access is read-only and governed by the “Run as” permission model, the same as every agent block. It can read public web pages and the record you pass in. It cannot write to your workspace by itself. Answers are returned as run variables for the current run only. A run variable is a value that lives only while the run is in progress. Nothing is written to the record, a list, or a note unless a later block writes it. If a downstream block does not consume an answer, that answer is discarded when the run ends.

Gotchas

  • The block rejects a list entry. The Web agent researches records, so passing a list entry straight into the Record input fails. Pass the parent record instead. See Records vs list entries for how to reach it from a list-based trigger.
  • Login-gated and private pages return weak answers. The agent reads the public web, so it cannot reliably read sources behind a paywall or a login. Expect thin or empty answers for facts that live only inside a private system. Verify anything business-critical.
  • Broad prompts quietly inflate cost. Pricing is token-based, so vague questions and many questions raise the credit cost on every run. Ask the fewest, most specific questions that answer your actual decision. Filter upstream so the agent only runs on records worth researching.
  • Answers vanish if you do not save them. The block returns answers as run variables, not record values. Follow it with Update record when the research needs to persist. Otherwise it disappears when the run ends.

Examples

Qualifying high-intent inbound leads

A SaaS team researches every company that lands on a high-intent inbound list, then writes a short brief and pings the owner. The Web agent runs after a Filter block has confirmed ideal-customer-profile fit. That way, tokens are spent only on records worth qualifying. The agent returns three answers. An Update record block writes them into the company’s research_notes attribute, and a Slack message alerts the account owner.

Preparing an account brief before a call

A consultant builds a one-line context note before each discovery call. The workflow runs on a Record command so a rep can launch it on demand from a Company record.
The agent returns two grounded answers. A following Update record block saves them to the record, and the rep opens the call already briefed on Priya Sharma’s recent public remarks.

Credit cost worked example

The Web agent is priced by tokens, so its cost depends on how many questions you ask and how much the agent reads and writes. Suppose a tightly scoped three-question brief averages roughly the cost of a small AI step. Now suppose the workflow runs on 200 qualified inbound companies a month. The lever that keeps that number down is filtering for ideal-customer-profile fit before the agent runs. Every record you exclude upstream is a run you never pay for. Token cost varies per run. So compare your expected monthly volume against your plan’s credit allowance on Credits & pricing explained rather than estimating it here.
