The Create task block creates a new Attio task, optionally linked to records and assigned to teammates. It belongs to the Tasks category. A task is a piece of follow-up work in Attio, like a to-do item. The task text is the only required input. A due date, linked records, and assignees are all optional. Assignees are notified when the task is created. Use this block to put real follow-up work in a person’s queue, not as a silent log entry.

Inputs

Outputs

A variable is a value you can reuse in a later block. Reference the created task downstream as {{ steps.create_task.task }}. For example, pass it into a later Complete task step.

Behavior

Create task runs once per execution and always inserts a new task. It does not check whether a similar task already exists. So two runs on the same input produce two tasks. Empty optional inputs are simply omitted. Say you leave Due, Linked records, or Assignees blank, or wire in a variable that resolves to no value. The block then creates the task without that field rather than failing. A task with no assignee lands in the workspace unassigned and notifies no one. Each assignee is notified when the task is created. That notification is the point of the block for most follow-up automations. It also means that a workflow firing more often than you expect turns into a stream of notifications for the assignee. To prevent that, add a Filter earlier in the workflow so only the runs that matter create a task. A filter is a step that stops the workflow unless a condition is met.

Gotchas

  • Duplicate tasks pile up on retries. Because the block always inserts, a retried run or a trigger that fires more than once creates a second copy of the same task. Guard against this in one of two ways. Filter the trigger tightly, or use Find records to check whether an open task already exists before this block runs.
  • An empty assignee creates a silent task. If the Assignees variable resolves to no value, the task is created unassigned and no one is notified. The follow-up then quietly never happens. Confirm the variable holds a workspace member before this block, or set a fixed fallback assignee.
  • The Due input is a date, not a duration. Create task expects an absolute due date, so wiring in “3 days” does not work. Compute the date first with an Adjust time step. Then pass its output into Due.

Examples

Creating a follow-up task for a stale deal

A pipeline-hygiene workflow finds deals with no activity for two weeks. It creates a task for each deal’s owner, due the next day. The block creates the task Follow up on Acme renewal: no activity for 14 days. It links the task to the Acme deal, assigns it to Priya Sharma, and notifies her that it is due tomorrow.

Creating an onboarding task on a closed-won deal

A handoff workflow fires when a deal moves to Closed won. It creates a kickoff task for the Customer Success owner.
The block creates the task Schedule onboarding kickoff for Acme. It links the task to the deal record, assigns it to Priya Sharma, and notifies her so the kickoff is scheduled before the deal goes cold.

Credit cost worked example

Create task costs 1 credit per run. Take a stale-deal sweep that creates one follow-up task for every flagged deal. If it flags 120 deals a month, it spends 120 credits on this block. Compare that figure against your plan’s monthly allowance on Credits & pricing explained. Only the runs that actually reach this block count, because failed runs and untaken branches consume no credits.
